Shallow M6.4 earthquake hits west of Macquarie Island
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit west of Macquarie Island at 13:17 UTC on June 4, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.3 at a depth of 10 km.
The epicenter was located 1635.9 km (1016.5 miles) S of Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
Argentina - Landslide (media, Servicio Meteorologico Nacional) (ECHO Daily Flash of 08 June 2022)
Heavy rainfall has been affecting the Rio Negro Province (central-southern Argentina) since 6 June, triggering a landslide that has resulted in casualties and damage.
Media report, as of 8 June, one fatality, two people still missing and three injured people in San Carlos de Bariloche City (far south-west of the Rio Negro Province, near the border with Chile) due to a landslide that occurred on 7 June. In addition, media report some destroyed houses across the affected area.
Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall is forecast the southwestern Rio Negro Province.
Floods and landslides claim at least 25 lives, affect more than 2.6 million people in southern China
At least 25 people have been killed and more than 2.6 million were affected in southern China since the start of this year’s flood season. In Hunan, China’s major rice-producing region, at least 96 160 ha (237 616 acres) of crops have been destroyed in the first 8 days of the month. Another 76 300 ha (187 8000 acres) of crops were damaged in neighboring Jiangxi.
Heavy rains, floods and landslides affecting Hunan this month claimed the lives of 10 people while three remain missing, as of June 8.1 In addition, at least 8 people were killed in Fujian, 5 in Yunan, and 2 in Guanxi since the start of the flood season.
286 000 people were evacuated in Hunan and a total of 1.79 million were affected this month.
More than 2 700 houses have collapsed or suffered severe damage and 96 160 ha (237 616 acres) of crops have been destroyed in the province – a major rice-producing region in China.
Direct economic losses are estimated at more than 4 billion yuan ($600 million).
The heavy rain has affected almost the whole province, with some rainfall monitoring stations registering precipitation at historic levels.
In neighboring Jiangxi, another 800 000 people were affected since May 28.2
The rainfall wreaked havoc in the province’s 80 counties, damaged 76 300 ha (187 8000 acres) of crops, and caused direct economic losses of 1.16 billion yuan (about 174 million U.S. dollars), according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.
Many villagers from Ganzhou City have been evacuated after heavy rains triggered floods on June 6, CCTV reported.
Downpours battered the Ganxian District of the city from 03:00 to 09:00 UTC on June 6, with the accumulated rainfall reaching 265 mm (10.43 inches), inundating croplands and roads.
Colombia - Severe weather
The "first rainy season" (which starts from mid-March and lasts to June) continues to affect Colombia, causing floods, flash floods, landslides, and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and WHO PAHO report, that 78 people have died, 91 have been injured and eight others are missing. More than 91,000 persons have been affected across 394 Municipalities in 28 Departments of Colombia.
Extensive damage has been reported to infrastructure, with more than 15,000 houses and 368 buildings being destroyed or damaged, while five health centres and 100 educational institutions have been damaged.
On 8-9 June, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is forecast over most of Colombia.
Cuba - Floods
Heavy rain has affected Matanzas Province (central-western Cuba) on 7-8 June, causing floods and resulting in evacuations and damage. According to WHO Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), 5,171 people have been evacuated and 562 houses affected following the flood events. On 2-3 June, the Provinces of Havana, Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Sancti Spíritus, and Matanzas have been hit by the recent tropical cyclone activity resulting in at least three fatalities and thousands of displaced people. On 9-10 June, moderate to heavy rain with localized thunderstorms is forecast across most parts of the Country.
Severe thunderstorms, tennis ball-sized hail wreak havoc across France
Severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain and up to tennis ball-sized hail to France on June 3 and 4, 2022, wreaking havoc in vineyards across large parts of the country, leaving thousands of homes without power, one person dead and 15 injured – two of them seriously.
Météo-France issued an Orange severe weather alert for 65 departments on June 4 – for the first time in more than 20 years. Some areas saw a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours. 50 000 lighting strikes were registered in 24 hours to June 5. Saint Gervais d’Auvergne in Puy de Dôme recorded winds of 106km/h (66 mph). A woman died after being trapped under a car by flash waters caused by a storm in the northern city of Rouen, the mayor’s office announced.1
In the Landes and Gers region of southwest France, hailstones bigger than golf balls crashed down on parts of the Armagnac vineyard, affecting tens of thousands of hectares.
“In the vineyards, there is nothing left, the roof of our agricultural building is a giant Swiss cheese, and in the house, the windows are broken,” wine grower Nelly Lacave from the Landes region told AFP. “My father, who is almost 70 years old, has never seen this,” she added.
In Loir-et-Cher, central France, 30 000 scouts who gathered for a camping trip over the Pentecost holiday weekend had to be rushed to safety, many of them inside the local chateau.
Guatemala - Severe weather
Since the beginning of the rainy season, heavy rainfall has been affecting most of Guatemala causing floods, landslides, and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage. The Guatemala National Coordination System for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reports as of 7 June that 12 people have died, and 7 others sustained injuries. About 353,720 persons have been affected, while 60 individuals have been placed in temporary shelters. On 6-7 June, heavy rainfall related to the rainy season affected the Departments of Chiquimula, Guatemala, Jalapa, San Marcos, Sololá, and Zacapa in southern and north-western Guatemala. According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and CONRED about 5,225 people were affected, and national authorities are carrying out Damage Assessments and Needs Analysis to determine how the affected population can be assisted through the distribution of humanitarian aid efforts. On 9-10 June, light to moderate rainfall with lightning is forecast over most of Guatemala.
